What is MT in translation?

Machine translation (MT) is automated translation.

It is the process by which computer software is used to translate text. A translation, whether human or automated, transmutes the meaning of a text from the original language into the target one.

It is not just a matter of replacing words with words. A translator must interpret and analyze all text elements and know how each word affects the other. This requires not just knowledge of grammar, syntax (sentence structure), and semantics (meanings), for example, in both source and target languages, but also familiarity with each culture.

Machine and human translation both have their own challenges. It is impossible, for example, for two translators to produce identical translations of the same text in the same language pair, and each translation may require multiple revision cycles to achieve customer satisfaction. Since machine translation is limited, the biggest challenge is how to produce publishable quality translations using it.
